Serenade to Spring
Marvel in the gorgeous aesthetic of the historical renovation of the former St. Joseph Convent and welcome the season of renewal with a joyful celebration of spring. Tchaikovsky’s masterwork “Serenade for Strings” anchors this concert that also features CWSO flutist Danielle Breisach.
Frederick Delius (1862–1934) was an English composer whose lush, atmospheric style grew from an unconventional life that took him from Yorkshire to Florida and later to Paris. His music blends impressionistic color, lyrical warmth, and diverse influences, making him one of the most distinctive voices in early twentieth‑century English music.
Anna Clyne is an English composer heralded by The New York Times as a “composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods”. A Grammy-nominated composer, she dedicates “Within Her Arms” to her mother, Colleen Clyne. Critics acclaimed her writing as “both mournful and full of life” as well as “a meditation on loss, love, and life”.
The CWSO’s principal flutist, Danielle Breisach, is a versatile flutist and educator who performs widely across the Midwest and serves as Principal Flute of the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. She teaches at UW–Stevens Point as Lecturer of Flute and Graduate Program Manager, directs the UWSP Flute Choir, and remains active in the broader flute community through leadership roles with the Wisconsin Flute Festival and Madison Flute Club.
Nicolas Bacri is a leading French composer whose music blends modern expressiveness with classical clarity. A prolific creator of more than 150 works and recipient of major honors including the Prix de Rome, he is known for elegant, lyrical writing across orchestral and chamber genres. His Spring Sonata captures that signature style with warm melodies, refined craftsmanship, and a sense of renewal that mirrors the season itself.
Peter Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was a Russian composer whose deeply expressive melodies and vivid orchestral color made him one of the most beloved voices of the Romantic era. Known for works that balance emotional intensity with elegant craftsmanship, he created music that remains central to the concert repertoire worldwide—from symphonies and ballets to intimate chamber pieces and songs.
We invite you to join us for Serenade to Spring, a celebration of renewal and expressive voices across time. From Delius’s atmospheric lyricism and Tchaikovsky’s Romantic brilliance to Bacri’s modern elegance and Anna Clyne’s vibrant contemporary imagination, this program brings together music that welcomes the season with color, energy, and hope.
