String Trio Opus 53, No.1 Franz Joseph Haydn

Published around 1789, Haydn’s String Trio in G major, Op. 53, No. 1, is a masterful exercise in conversational chamber music. The work shares its material with his Piano Sonata Hob. XVI:40, and the arrangement seamlessly translates the keyboard textures into a sparkling dialogue among violin, viola, and cello.

The trio opens with an Allegretto e innocente, a gentle theme-and-variations movement driven by a simple, naive, and lilting melody. It is followed immediately by a whimsical Presto, full of the sudden dynamic contrasts, wit, and rhythmic energy that define Haydn’s signature comedic style.

Duo for Violin and Viola No. 1 K. 423 W.A. Mozart

Archbishop of Salzburg originally commissioned Michael Haydn to compose six violin and viola duos. When Haydn fell severely ill after completing only four, Mozart stepped in as a secret favor to save his friend from a steep salary cut.

Mozart composed the final two duos, which Haydn successfully submitted under his own name; ironically, the Archbishop praised the completed set, unwittingly favoring Mozart’s contributions. While Mozart consciously adopted a lighter texture to match Haydn’s style, his effortless mastery and conversational flair shine through. Both works discard traditional accompanimental roles, treating the violin and viola as equal, highly virtuous partners.

String Trio in c minor, Opus 9, No. 3  L.V. Beethoven

Beethoven considered his Op. 9 trios to be the finest achievements of his early career. Among the set, the Trio in C minor stands out as the most dramatic, utilizing Beethoven’s signature key of storm and stress (sturm und drang) to elevate the three-instrument medium to a symphonic scale.
The work opens with an intense Allegro con spirito driven by stark dynamic contrasts and restless energy. A profound, lyrical Adagio con espressione follows in C major, utilizing intricate double-stops to create the illusion of a full four-voice string quartet. The rhythmic drive returns in the dark Scherzo, which yields to a breathless, rapid-fire Finale. Instead of a tragic conclusion, Beethoven ends the work with an unexpected, whispered shift into C major. This masterpiece marked Beethoven’s final exploration of the string trio format before he turned his attention to his groundbreaking Op. 18 string quartets.

Cinq Pièces en Trio  by Jacques Ibert
Written in 1935, Cinq Pièces en Trio is a radiant cornerstone of the reed trio repertoire. Jacques Ibert composed this five-movement miniature suite for the Trio d’Anches de Paris, dedicating it to the ensemble’s legendary bassoonist Fernand Oubradous. True to Ibert’s signature neoclassical style, the work balances crisp wit, effortless elegance, and absolute transparency. Over its brief eight-minute duration, the piece features a captivating dialogue among the oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. The fast movements sparkle with rhythmic vitality and playful motifs—including a whimsical “cuckoo” bird call in the third movement—while the two expressive Andantes provide moments of serene, lyrical repose.
Tango & Co. by Helga Warner-Buhlmann
Helga Warner-Buhlmann’s Tango & Co. is a charming suite of five miniature dances that blends classical chamber writing with the character and energy of popular dance styles. Originally written for woodwind ensemble and arranged for several instrumental combinations, the work moves through a colorful sequence of Tango, Waltz, Polka, Blues, and Bolero, each capturing a distinct mood and rhythmic personality. Though concise in length, the suite offers lively contrasts, playful interaction between performers, and accessible melodic writing that highlights both the expressive and virtuosic possibilities of the ensemble.
Suite en Trio by Claude Arrieu
French composer Claude Arrieu’s Suite en Trio reflects the elegance, clarity, and wit characteristic of mid-20th century French chamber music. Written with a light, transparent texture and lively rhythmic energy, the suite showcases graceful interplay among the performers while balancing lyricism with moments of playful charm. Arrieu’s accessible yet sophisticated style draws on neoclassical influences, blending expressive melodies with crisp articulation and colorful harmonies. The result is a work that is both refined and engaging, highlighting the conversational nature and versatility of the ensemble.
Divertimento in Bb major, K. 439b No. 1 by W.A. Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Divertimento in B-flat Major, K. 439b No. 1 is part of a set of lighthearted chamber works composed in the late eighteenth century and now frequently performed by reed trio ensembles. True to the spirit of the divertimento genre, the piece combines elegance, charm, and entertainment with Mozart’s unmistakable melodic craftsmanship. Its graceful phrases, balanced structure, and lively exchanges between the oboe, clarinet, and bassoon create music that is both sophisticated and approachable. Though written as lighter social music, the work demonstrates Mozart’s ability to elevate even intimate chamber forms with clarity, wit, and expressive beauty.
Suite by Alexandre Tansman
Alexandre Tansman’s Suite reflects the composer’s distinctive blend of neoclassical elegance and twentieth-century harmonic color. A Polish-born composer who spent much of his career in France, Tansman combined clear formal structures with rhythmic vitality and expressive lyricism. The movements of the suite contrast lively dance-like passages with more reflective moments, allowing each instrument of the reed trio to shine both individually and as part of the ensemble. With its refined textures, energetic interplay, and modern yet accessible language, the work highlights Tansman’s skill in writing chamber music that is both sophisticated and engaging.
Divertimento on Folk Songs by Stephan de Haan
Contemporary Dutch composer Stephan de Haan’s Divertimento on Folk Songs is a lively and imaginative work that draws inspiration from traditional folk melodies. Blending familiar folk-like character with modern harmonies and rhythmic energy, the piece explores a variety of moods and colors within the reed trio setting. De Haan’s writing emphasizes spirited interaction among the instruments, balancing playful exchanges with expressive lyricism. The result is a work that feels both accessible and fresh, celebrating the enduring appeal of folk music through a contemporary musical voice.
